Supporting Autism with MeRT Therapy at Brain Treatment Center Fort Worth

Receiving an autism diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but early and effective intervention can make a meaningful difference in a child’s development. At Brain Treatment Center Fort Worth, we offer Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT) for both children and adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). MeRT can be used as a standalone therapy or integrated alongside other autism treatments such as ABA, speech, or occupational therapy.

While MeRT is not a cure for autism, many patients experience noticeable improvements in key areas such as communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, and overall independence. These changes often lead to enhanced participation in daily life and a higher quality of functioning.

Although MeRT is currently considered an “off-label” treatment for autism and is not yet FDA-approved for this use, emerging clinical research and real-world outcomes show promising potential. For many families, MeRT has become a valuable tool in helping their children develop skills that show improved symptoms and better engagement with the world around them.

MeRT treatment can help alleviate associated symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-concussive Syndrome and has helped patients to be able to get their lives back with significant improvements in symptoms.

People with traumatic brain injuries often go through other types of therapies to help them regain function and cope with their injury or disability. And we can use MeRT treatment in conjunction with these therapies.

MeRT for Concussion Recovery

In moderate to severe head injuries, with or without loss of consciousness, time may not alleviate the symptoms and further intervention is necessary. This is also true if a person suffers a second or multiple injuries to the brain.

Patients who have severe injuries may need rehabilitation for things such as speech or other senses affected, memory, coordination and motor skills, and even for emotions. People’s lives can be seriously disrupted because of a brain injury and may affect their relationships, the ability to cope with normal stressors, the ability to work again, or to even complete simple day to day activities.

Statistics for closed head injuries indicate that for patients who have a moderate injury, 60% will make a positive recovery, but approximately 25% will not and will continue to have impaired function.

People who have suffered a brain injury will have markers that are visible in their EEG studies. Research has shown that people who have experienced a traumatic brain injury will have a higher power in their delta band frequencies and lower power in the alpha bands. What this means is that those injured parts of your brain may be “asleep.” MeRT can help to “wake up” these areas of the brain again.

We perform a qEEG on each patient before treatment in order to determine the exact frequencies of the brain. We then review the results and develop a treatment plan specific to each patient’s unique condition. MeRT technology uses magnetic fields that pass through the scalp from an electromagnetic coil to help the brain return to normal function. Most patients have noted significant clinical improvements. MeRT for Depression

Symptoms can vary from person to person based on severity and can range from mild to severe. Depression can be debilitating and affect quality of life and even the ability to function normally. It can be brought on acutely by a specific situation such as the death of a loved one or physical or emotional trauma or illness, but it can also have unknown causes and can be chronic.

Many people who are chronically depressed take medication to help them manage the symptoms associated with Depression, however medication can have unwanted side-effects and serves to manage symptoms. MeRT is non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive treatment for Depression.

Major Depressive Disorder affects over three million people in the U.S. each year, according to the Mayo Clinic. Emerging research now supports what many clinicians have long suspected—depression is not just emotional, but also neurological, involving measurable changes in brain function and disruptions in how certain neural circuits operate.

One common neurological marker in individuals with clinical depression is an imbalance in brainwave activity between the brain’s left and right hemispheres—a phenomenon known as asymmetry. This imbalance is often visible in EEG studies and can correlate with mood dysregulation and other depressive symptoms.

MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is designed to address this imbalance. By analyzing each patient’s brainwave patterns through a non-invasive, quantitative EEG (qEEG), we can pinpoint areas where neural activity is out of sync. The MeRT protocol then uses gentle magnetic stimulation to encourage healthier, more balanced brainwave communication. Each treatment plan is completely customized, based on the individual’s specific brainwave frequencies and clinical symptoms.

MeRT offers a personalized, evidence-based approach to healing from depression by focusing on what’s happening inside the brain, not just managing the symptoms. READ MORE…

We have successfully used MeRT to treat PTSD, as well as the conditions that go along with this disorder, such as depression and/or anxiety.

MeRT for PTSD

PTSD, or Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, can occur when a person has experienced or witnessed terrifying life events, experienced physical or mental abuse, or extended periods of extreme stress.

Some people that undergo traumatic events have difficulty coping, but can bounce back over time. However, for others, the symptoms of PTSD can continue on for months or years, and in some cases may even get worse. Additionally, it’s possible to have delayed onset of Post-traumatic Stress as in some cases of child abuse for example. Others may get through traumatic events, only to have them triggered years later by something else.

One study completed by the National Institute of Health indicates that during the past year, up to 3.6% of adults experienced PTSD. The symptoms associated with this can significantly affect quality of life, relationships, and the ability to cope with every day, common stressors.

As I write this, I just completed my sixth week of treatment. A conservative estimate is that I have had a 60 – 70% reduction of the symptoms I listed above and have a whole new lease on life. I can focus. I feel good about myself. I feel confident. I laugh again. Most importantly, I can feel the love for and from my family again.” – Veteran, after undergoing MeRT therapy

How MeRT Works

MeRT stands for Magnetic Resonance Therapy, a non-invasive and drug-free treatment. Neurologist Spencer O. Miller, M.D. is now offering this treatment in Fort Worth. The treatment, which is guided by very sophisticated imaging, involves using non-invasive magnetic waves to modulate and balance function of the brain.

Simply put, we use a magnetic field guided by sophisticated imaging and diagnostics to balance brain function.

The patient first undergoes a qEEG (quantitative EEG) to identify dysregulation occurring in the brain. The results will show the brain’s brainwave pattern and function. This detailed analysis allows Dr. Miller to determine the exact neural synchronization protocol that will be used for each patient with the objective of encouraging improved communication within the brain which can lead to significant clinical improvements. *

MeRT utilizes rTMS (repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). And rTMS modulates the brain’s activity by using magnetic fields which pass through the scalp from an electromagnetic coil.

MeRT utilizes TMS, however it is a greatly improved process since the treatment is individualized for each patient’s condition and needs based on the qEEG results. Frequency, location, and power used is customized for each individual.

MeRT is a more evolved version of TMS since its protocol combines technologies of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) which allows for treatment protocol based on each person’s unique brain pattern.

MeRT is generally administered anywhere from 4 – 8 weeks.  Since it is a type of therapy, appointments are every day, Monday through Friday, and usually last approximately 30-minutes. Usually the patient will begin to notice improvements in the way they feel during the first week. After going through treatment, there is usually not a need for any follow up treatment, however some parents of Autistic kids do bring their children back the following year to build on the benefits realized from the first round of treatment.

Hear it from the Patients

Our patients have a lot to say about their experience with MeRT!

“After trying various treatments and conducting thorough research, we decided to travel from our home in Illinois to the Brain Treatment Center in Dallas. It was the BEST decision we could have made for our six-year-old son, who has severe apraxia and is on the spectrum.

“After six weeks of MeRT treatment, our son said his name for the first time! He has been more flexible in his daily schedule, OCD tendencies have lessened tremendously, and he does not become as anxious as he had previously experienced in new places and surroundings.

“We cannot thank Dr. Miller and his staff enough for the kindness, care, and genuine concern they have shown (and continue to show) our son and our family. They are always available for questions and concerns, and they truly support all patients and their families. For our family, MeRT and the Brain Treatment Center have been a journey worth the endeavor!”

The Korczak family

Parents of child with autism

“I’ve made significant progress in cognitive ability, stress tolerance, and mental clarity. I have been able to handle decisions much better and think clearer. And I have been able to significantly decrease conflict with my family and actually lead much better.”

Male with TBI

Executive

“We are dropping a line to thank you for your help last summer with Immanuel. We are RVing this weekend and marveling at how well Immanuel now socializes with other children at the campsite. He is also at a private school, and he is able to succeed without the extra support.

“His occupational therapist has been amazed, as well. She evaluated him before he started treatment with you but started therapy AFTER. She says that he has been crushing the prescribed program — he scored significantly above expectations at the latest eval, and he is speeding through the stages.

“We are thrilled by Immanuel’s progress. It touches our hearts more than anything—that he has friends now. Thank you for making this treatment available and for your guiding us through the process.”

David and Debbie J.

Parents of child with Autism

“I’m back! My TBI turned me into someone I barely recognized. I was depressed, mean, and short-tempered. And I pushed through life filled with frustration and a deep sense of sadness that this was it — I just had to keep pushing through life with overwhelming tiredness. I’m so glad I was wrong. I think my direct reports and family are even more thankful. This treatment changed everything, and I am forever thankful.”

41-year-old male with TBI

Executive

“As I am still in treatment and can’t speak to the final results yet, I want to direct my comments to Dr. Miller and his staff. They are all amazing! He is smart and works hard to help you understand the complex issues of the brain and how it relates to how we function.

“Katie is the best at working to make the appointments fit your schedule, and the two technicians are wonderful — so professional and friendly as well. It is such a positive environment, creating great hope! I recommend it wholeheartedly!”

Jim

Patient

“It was a great experience with a very friendly and professional staff! When we first brought our child to the clinic, we expected some progress with her speech skills, but we ended up getting results in other unexpected areas.

“The first change we saw with our daughter was that she started to make eye contact. Then she started to be more aware of her surroundings. Second, she stopped stemming, and that was the biggest change for her. Third but not least, she started to socialize and play with other children!”
