MeRT: What is it and How Does it Work?

MeRT stands for Magnetic E-Resonance Therapy.

Each person’s brain is completely unique to them. No one’s electrical activity, brain waves, or thought patterns are like anyone else’s. What makes the MeRT process so cutting-edge is that treatment protocol is customized for each individual person.

This technology is used to reprogram abnormal electrical signals and pathways in the patient’s brain. It is an extremely effective technology that is non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive.

In more technical terms, MeRT is able to use an individualized approach by obtaining a qEEG, which is a study that measures the pattern of electrical signals and brain waves in the patient’s brain. The results of this tell us what is functioning normally in the brain, and also shows us where dysregulation is occurring.

We use this information to create a precision treatment protocol which uses a technology called repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS).

MeRT, as with rTMS, uses a type of magnet on the scalp to send magnetic waves to specifically targeted areas of the brain in a way that reorganizes the signals and pathways. This can then stimulate and organize the function of neurons back into a normal pattern. This process is called neuromodulation.

With MeRT we identify exactly where the brain waves are not communicating properly and help to restore proper function.

MeRT is completely non-invasive, painless, and drug-free. It is used to reprogram dysfunctional electrical signals in the brain to improve connectivity and communication in the brain.

MeRT and Brain Disruptions

The brain operates through electrical signals known as brain waves, which are generated by neurons to regulate various cognitive and bodily functions. When these patterns are disrupted—whether by internal imbalances or external factors—it can interfere with normal brain activity and lead to a wide range of issues, such as:

  • Head injuries like concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
  • Emotional distress, including chronic stress, PTSD, or past trauma
  • Clinical depression and other mood disorders
  • Neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease or stroke
  • Substance use disorders involving drugs or alcohol
  • Learning challenges and academic struggles
  • Developmental conditions such as Autism, ADD, or ADHD
  • Cognitive decline associated with dementia
  • Repeated sports-related impacts to the head
  • Generalized anxiety and panic disorders
  • Sleep disturbances or chronic insomnia
  • Genetic or congenital brain irregularities

These disruptions can vary in severity—some individuals may continue daily routines with difficulty, while others may face significant impairment that affects every aspect of their life.

MeRT utilizes a specialized analysis of brainwave activity to pinpoint specific regions in the brain that are out of sync or underperforming. By identifying these areas of disrupted communication, our medical team is able to create a customized treatment plan tailored to the individual’s unique neurological patterns. This precise therapy works by gently stimulating the targeted brain regions, encouraging improved connectivity and function.

Extensive research and published clinical studies support the effectiveness of MeRT in addressing a variety of neurological conditions, highlighting its potential to promote lasting improvements in brain health.

Evaluation

We will first perform the qEEG (brain scan) and an EKG. These are the tests needed to determine the activity and dysregulation in the brain, along with the brain-heart coherence.

The difference between a standard EEG and a qEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) is that a regular EEG records electrical activity and brainwaves which show the underlying brain activity.

The qEEG applies state-of-the-art mathematical and statistical analysis to the brainwaves and compares them databases compiled from EEGs of persons with no known brain dysregulation. The qEEG allows us to create a brain “map” which provides us with the information needed to identify patterns of dysfunction that are consistent with various disorders of the brain such as brain injury, emotional disorders, learning problems, behavioral issues and more.

The qEEG is the map that we use to guide treatment for each person, thus improving brainwave activity and correcting dysregulation, step by step.

Analysis and Protocol

The Brain Treatment Center uses a scientific, patented approach based on the data gathered to come up with a tailored treatment protocol specifically for you, with the goal being to restore normal function and brain communication.

Your second appointment will serve as your clinical evaluation from Dr. Miller. He will have your test results and can go over treatment protocols along with answering any questions you may have.

If you are uncertain whether MeRT is the right treatment for you, the testing and consultation will allow both you and the doctor to decide if you may benefit from Magnetic Resonance Therapy.

MeRT Treatment

Should you decide to proceed with treatment, we will get you scheduled for your 2-week assessment period of treatment. Once your treatment protocols have been determined, MeRT treatment begins.

Therapy is done in two-week intervals, 5 days per week, and lasts approximately 30-35 minutes per day. You are only required to sit comfortably in a chair while our neuro technician places the magnetic coil against your scalp and administers the treatment. The coil produces a gentle, low-frequency magnetic field which will induce mild electrical signals in the parts of the brain being targeted. Stimulation occurs for 8-10 seconds for every minute that you are in the chair. Treatment is painless, though you may feel a slight sensation which some have described as a mild “brain massage.”

Progress Evaluation

Additional qEEG/EKGs are performed every two weeks. This allows us to monitor your progress and make any needed modifications to your treatment. During your treatment with us, we will also closely monitor clinical improvements and changes to the way that you are feeling.

In order to achieve optimal results that are long-lasting, most conditions require 4-6 weeks of treatment. Results are based on strict compliance of our treatment regimens. Results may vary based on each individual and are not guaranteed.
